Alan and Nairelys Lopez are the sole owners of Rumba Cubana. They are both from the same city in Cuba called CHAMBAS, which is a small town in the northern part of Ciego de Avila.
When Alan was able to leave Cuba, he had to abandon his career path of being a medical student to start a new life in another country. He always dreamed of having his own restaurant but, being in Cuba, that was just a dream.
This young couple arrived in the United States in the year 2000. It was when new opportunities touched their lives, but there were still challenges to be overcome. They brought with them a dream of opening a restaurant and a suitcase of favorite family recipes.
Alan apprenticed under his uncle who owns a Cuban style cafeteria. He did every possible job to learn the business. Nairelys studied accounting and got her bachelors’ degree in 2007.
Alan was yearning to recreate and share the lost flavor of home. It was in the year 2004 when he opened Rumba’s Café. It’s a cafeteria-style establishment that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The couple aspired to open a full-service Cuban restaurant to showcase their heritage. The business plan was very straightforward—they just wanted high-quality food, large portions, incomparable service, and an exceptional atmosphere at an unbeatable price. Hence, the birth of the first Rumba Cubana in 2009. Rumba’s first home was on 75th & Broadway in North Bergen, NJ, which was later relocated to a beautiful building overlooking NYC, right on BLVD EAST. Another location was opened a few years after on Tonnelle Ave, North Bergen. Their latest baby opened in Clifton in 2017 and two more exciting locations are on their way in Jersey City and Rochelle Park.
